1 2/3 cups whole milk
1/4 cup sugar

  • heat over medium heat until boiling.

1/4 cup sugar
3 Tbsp. cornstarch

  • mix in a small bowl and set aside

4 egg yolks
2 Tbsp. butter, softened
2 tsp. vanilla

  • beat yolks in a small bowl while milk and sugar is heating
  • when milk is hot, mix in sugar and cornstarch mixture
  • slowly pour in about 1 cup of hot milk mixture, while stirring
  • pour milk/egg mixture back into pot and continue heating until thickened and the mixture reaches 185°F
  • remove from heat, stir in butter until melted and combined
  • stir in vanilla
  • cover with plastic wrap pressed aginst the surface of the custard and let cool
  • chill and use in desserts like tiramisu or serve in individual serving cups
